The Challenge

What is Herd Trauma?

Across Uganda, millions of young people carry pain they did not choose — the accumulated weight of communities shaped by conflict, displacement, and generations of exclusion. We call this Herd Trauma: shared, inherited suffering that moves between people before a child has ever made a single decision of their own.

Conventional approaches treat trauma one person at a time. But when pain is collective, healing must be collective too. That is the founding insight behind everything Sharing Circles does.

Our Foundation

Why We Exist

Our Vision

A world where the cycle of Herd Trauma is broken — and every young person has the agency to move from shared pain to communal power.

Our Mission

To foster community-led healing by equipping youth with the tools to process collective trauma, reclaim their narratives, and lead social transformation.

Our Philosophy

Healing precedes transformation. We create non-clinical, community-owned spaces where vulnerability is not a weakness to be managed, but the starting point for justice and lasting resilience.

Our Compass

Values — C.A.R.E

C

Compassion

Every circle begins with empathy. We ensure each young person feels genuinely seen and heard — not processed or managed.

A

Agility

We respond to what communities actually need — not what we assumed they would. Adaptability is core to how we work.

R

Resilience

We build the capacity to understand adversity, learn from it, and move forward with purpose — not simply to survive it.

E

Empowerment

True empowerment gives people the tools to lead their own futures — not a dependence on solutions from outside.
